The Wilders Ranch

Animals are an important part of the sustainable farm and ranch. They contribute to the livelihood of the homesteader along with the health of our soil.

In this camp you meet the animals of local farms and ranches. From free range chickens who hide their eggs in secret forests nests (an old fashioned egg hunt is required) to working with our farm goats and learning how to make cheese from their milk, this camp promises hands on experience with all manner of creatures small and large.

Care and Safety

A large focus of this camp is proper safety in interacting with livestock, along with the health and care of the animals we tend to. We not only travel to the rural ranches but also focus on sustainable urban farms who make an effort to include animals while Wilding in the City

We visit goats, sheep and chickens that give us both food and fiber. We also meet actual working dogs that guide and guard their flock.

Addressing the deeper impact of grazing, gleaning and browsing animals on the land we live, we explore how sheep can enrich a pasture and how goats can help prevent forest fires through thoughtful rotation.

All this plus embark on spinning and knitting projects, carrying fiber to finish and make homemade ice cream or butter in feats of the artisnal dairy.

Wild West Week August 13-17, 2012
All camps this week have a Wild West theme. Our focus is the life on the ranch, living working and playing on the open range.

A Smile

We help children to feel like that group of kids wandering country backyards 50 years ago: independent, tired, muddy, wet and happy from the woods and wild. We are acutely aware of full and real hazards of the out of doors after years of working in environmental education. We try to move away from the highly structured and limiting tolerances of conventional environmental education while keeping kids truly safe but not encapsulated from, or phobic of nature. We are deep patriots to the value of offering guided yet very free and transparent experiences for kids. We believe it is okay to be thirsty at times, cold at times, and wet at times. It builds empathy and care for the gifts of life. It fosters adventure and sincere accomplishment. We also believe it is critical to feel supported and cared for as they truly explore their passion and responsibility. And through a healthy life immersed in nature, they test the limits and great potential of the often untapped physical and emotional resiliency they possess.
