Portland Woodworking Classes for Teens
Beginning with an introduction to joinery students will learn how to layout lap joints and mortises and tennons using saddle squares and try squares. Students will learn how to cut out tennons using japanese saws, and how to make notches in wood as part of their introduction to using chiseling and gouging tools safely. As this will be the first time many students get to use this type of cutting tools we will have extensive safety training that will be similar to knife safety education.

Tools and Techniques
As students skills progress they will learn to use hand planes, spokeshaves, and drawknives as needed in their projects. With these new tools and skills students can try wood sculpting and attempt more difficult projects. This class will also present information about the woods we use in our projects, different species of tree, how woods change as they dry and proper finishing techniques. The instructor teaches from a viewpoint of respect for trees and the craft, which together have had great impact the world over.
