The Location

15 acres of beautiful land only 3 blocks from the beach! It is mixed land with large pastures with plenty of blackberries (think of the permacultural solutions to this non-problem!) and mixed woods of Red Alder, Sitka Spruce, Hemlock, Blue Elderberry, and Red Huckleberry. The main home where everyone will be staying is a large log cabin home with a communal kitchen, nice hardwood floors throughout, a piano, and other modern amenities. The zone 1 house garden is out the side door with cooking herbs, vegetables, and the start of a food forest nearby. The zone 2 market garden is 50 yards away and is terraced onto a south facing slope. There is also a wood fired sauna and natural springs near the house. The Town of Manzanita is only 1 mile away, and is a nice walk on the beach or a super short bike ride. Manzanita has a natural food store and a non-profit building supply reuse store called CARTM, a Saturday farmers market, plus many other fun things to do.

The Program

June 14–August 27, 2010. We will meet for class time 3 days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Class will be both hands on activities and lectures. You will have some homework, but mostly in the end for your design presentation. We will be partnering with a Permaculture teaching organization from Australia to aid with our curriculum and they will be over viewing students final designs . Henry will be your guide through this course, plus we will learn many other practical skills not included in traditional Permaculture design courses. This PDC - Permaculture Design Certificate will be sanctioned by the Permaculture Institute of Australia, the most recognized PDC certificate in the world.

Throughout the summer participants will have the opportunity to make money by growing their own vegetables to sell at our farmers market stand in Manzanita on Saturdays.

Tuition

Cost is $500 a month, which includes a room, utilities, and basic food staples. There is also a $250 Course fee, which will also be your deposit. Total cost of the program is $1750, you are welcome to pay this at all at once, or at the beginning of each month. We are only taking 6-8 participants for this summer immersion program.
